FAQs
Are your doors solid wood?
Solid wood, while great for furniture, is not ideal for kitchen cabinet doors. Solid wood is prone to warping and can swell and contract with changes in humidity which can cause cracks to form at the joints. To ensure perfectly finished doors without cracks we use 100% Canadian softwood fibre. Our medium density fibreboard (MDF) allows us to produce doors that are super smooth and allow for a high degree of detail – perfect for painted doors. MDF offers a high degree of water resistance which is ideal for kitchens and bathrooms.
How do I match the rest of my cabinets to my new doors?
By using Sherwin Williams paint on all our kitchen cabinet doors, we’ve partnered with a well-known, global brand with years of experience manufacturing quality products. Even better? You can easily paint face frames to match your Nieu doors by picking up the corresponding paint from your local Sherwin Williams supplier.
Our doors are painted in a satin finish with an 18% gloss meter.
What about glass ready doors?
All our doors are available either as a frame or as a frame with mullions so that glass inserts can be installed. We do not supply glass inserts. We suggest you source the glass and installation from a glass installation expert in your local area. Frame or mullions doors will have a groove on the back that allows for glass installation.
I have really small drawer fronts, will they have the same detail as the doors?
For all door styles except for Scandia, Flat Top, Pillow and Skinny, if your item is less than 5 ½” it will be a slab front, as it’s too small to produce a routed look. For more information, visit the product PDF of the door style you are ordering for the minimum height for routed fronts.
Why do you make two-piece doors where there is a flat center panel?
In our opinion, a two-piece door is a better product than the traditional method of pocketing or machining out the center panels. Our method produces doors that allow for a higher degree of sanding detailed edges, are less prone to warping, and provide a more stable finished product.
What is hinge boring and on-centre measurements?
Hinge boring refers to the 35mm holes that are bored into the back of a door to accommodate the cup of a concealed hinge. We bore hinge holes at a standard measurement of 3.75” On-Centre. This means that the hinge hole will be drilled 3.75” from the top of the door to the centre of the top hinge hole and 3.75” from the bottom of the door to the centre of the bottom hinge hole. We can bore for hinges at a different location should you require it, just let us know on your order.
Why can’t I just install my new hinges in the same spot as my old ones?
Hinges are comprised of two parts – the hinge itself (which looks like an arm and attaches to your cabinet door), and the hinge plate. The hinge plate is the piece that gets attached to your cabinet with screws. We don’t want your new hinge plates to screw into the same holes as your old hinge plates. Whether your cabinets are framed or frameless, it is best to practice to ensure the hinges attach to the cabinet in a spot that is a minimum of ½” away from an old screw hole.
How do I know what hinge I need?
Frameless cabinets typically require new 110 degree soft close hinges. We supply a refacing plate which makes installation very easy. Frameless cabinets may require speciality hinges for corner cabinets such as Lazy Susan, Blind Corner or 45 Degree Corners. Download the Nieu Door Guide for information on corner cabinet hinges.
Framed cabinets require hinges with a specific overlay suited to your frame width. Overlay refers to the amount of the door that covers or overlays the face frame. Common face frame overlays are ½”, ¾”, 1” and 1-1/4”. Framed Cabinets may also require Lazy Susan Corner speciality hinges as well.
Will you drill the holes for my cabinet door handles or pulls?
No, this is definitely better done onsite. This way you can make sure you place them exactly where you want once you see the door hanging in your kitchen. Remember to drill these holes from the front of the door, use a pencil to mark each hole location and make or use a jig if possible to ensure consistent placement.

How do I reface the sides of my cabinets?
Cover panels or paint, the choice is yours. Panels are typically recommended for frameless cabinets while paint is usually the best solution for framed cabinets. Panels are 3/4” thick and can be painted by us or you to match your doors. They screw on to the side of your cabinets from the inside and are a great way to change the color of the exterior. For best results when measuring for panels, simply match the height of the cabinet side and then measure the width. If you’d like the panel to sit flush with your doors, be sure to add ¾” to the width of the cabinet base you are covering with a panel.
Tip: if you want a truly custom look, order doors (without hinge boring) instead of flat panels for the sides of your cabinets. The measuring process is the same.
What about toe kicks, fillers and light valance?
We sell toe kicks, filler, trim, and decorative molding (as light valence or cabinet topper) which are available in standard sizes. These can be cut to size and installed on top of your existing toe kicks using an adhesive or a pin nailer in an inconspicuous spot. Light valance can be cut to size and installed under your cabinets for a finished look and/or to hide under cabinet lighting. Or they can be installed at the top of your cabinet as a filler or minimalist crown molding.
How can I be sure the color I pick online will look good?
We know that color is important in achieving your dream kitchen, which is why we’ve selected colors from industry leader, Sherwin Williams. Each of our colors has been selected to be on-trend, decor friendly, and stylish for your kitchen cabinet doors. We suggest ordering a sample kit or picking up paint swatches at your local Sherwin Williams to test the color in your space and light, and against countertops, flooring or backsplash. We use a Satin Sheen for all of our paint colors.
